Europe 2010 Amsterdam Netherlands Day 17, Sunday, 13 June 2010
We set sail and left beautiful Germany for the Netherlands arriving at Amsterdam mid- morning. Amsterdam is an interesting a vibrant city, the capital of the Netherlands, located in the northwest. The river Amstel terminates in the city centre with the famous canals. It is only 2 meters above sea level and the surrounding land is flat as it is formed of large polders; consequently everyone even the older generation ride bicycles everywhere and you find bicycle bays everywhere. Once again our time in Amsterdam was too short and we did not get to see the many museums that we would have liked to visit. Maybe next time.
In the afternoon we visited Zaanse Schans, a historic park with an amazing collection of windmills and traditional houses. It was a typically Dutch experience. On the way we stopped at the cheese and clog makers for an entertaining demonstration of cheese and clog making enabling us to purchase the inevitable souvenirs.
After dinner we decided to walk along the canals to Anne Frank's House which, unfortunately, was closed by the time we arrived. We stopped at a local pub for a drink to experience the local scene. As it it World Cup time, all the local establishments were decorated in the colours of the Netherlands and the local talk was of the coming game.
